Can Heavy Metals Cause Thyroid Disorders?

Today’s world is saturated with a host of toxic heavy metals and studies have shown that even the smallest amounts of ingested heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, aluminum, lead and arsenic can have a huge impact on your overall health, including the health of your thyroid gland and normal thyroid function

Mercury it’s link to Autoimmune Disease and other Negative Health Effects
There’s a number of reasons an autoimmune response may be triggered and exposure to heavy metals appears to be one of them. Mercury is one of the more well known and extensively studies heavy metals and exposure and absorption of Mercury usually occurs from dental fillings, fish, vaccines, industrial sources and a worrying observation is now we’re finding babies are being born with excessive levels of mercury that have been passed on from the mother via the umbilical cord. This of course is the case with other heavy metals well, along with other toxins such as endochrine disruptors/xenoestrogens.
One study established that noticeable elevated mercury levels found in the fetuses and older infants correlated with the number of dental fillings of their mother. It is also well established that mercury is a know neurotoxin that has devastating effects on the developing brain of a fetus resulting in lower IQ as the child develops after birth
Mercury and Thyroid Disorders
Iodine is an essential element required for normal thyroid function and the thyroid gland is very good at storing any available iodine the body maybe circulating for use ‘as needed’. Unfortunately chemically mercury and iodine are very similar, therefore the thyroid gland cannot differentiate between the two, as a result mercury will be stored in the thyroid gland taking up space normally allocated for iodine causing a ‘stored iodine deficiency’ resulting in reduced thyroid gland production of T4 and T3 hormones and ultimately hypothyroidism (under active thyroid)
Secondly, heavy metals including mercury can put you at risk of developing a thyroid autoimmune disorder such as Hashimotos and Graves Disease. Research has shown a link between elevated heavy metal levels and thyroid autoimmune disorders. A 2011 study established that women with high mercury exposure were more than twice as likely to have thyroid antibodies.
Antibodies ‘in general’ are produced by the immune system as a means of attacking, destroying and removing viruses and/or toxic material from the body. In the case of the presence of Thyroid antibodies, the body has produced these antibodies because the immune system has either:
1. Established the Thyroid gland is saturated with heavy metals or other toxic compounds, therefore the antibodies have been produced in an attempt to remove them
2. The immune system is now recognizing the Thyroid gland as a foreign object due the heavy metal/toxic compound saturation and/or damage to ‘normal cells’ by mercury in particular making them appear ‘inferior’ and is now in a last ditched attempt trying to remove the entire Thyroid gland.
Of course both of the above cause severe inflammation triggering the immune system into action in the first place
Anti-thyroid antibodies target specific parts of the thyroid gland, including:
Thyroid peroxidase (TPO). TPO is an enzyme that plays an important role in making thyroid hormones.
Thyroglobulin (Tg). This substance also helps your body make thyroid hormones.
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor. TSH sticks to the receptor on thyroid cells, which causes the gland to make and release thyroid hormone into the blood.
The antibodies can damage the gland, make it swell, and affect how it works. This can lead to medical conditions like:
Hashimoto’s disease is the most common Thyroid autoimmune disorder leaving the sufferer with an underactive thyroid
Signs of Hashimoto’s disease include:
Feeling very tired or sluggish, Being very sensitive to cold, Weight gain, Body or joint pain, Feeling depressed
Graves disease is when your thyroid gland has gone into overdrive or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
This happens when antibodies are produced called thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSIs). The TSIs bind to thyroid cell receptors, which are normally “allocated” for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH is the hormone responsible for telling the thyroid to produce the hormones T4 and T3). The TSIs then trick the thyroid into growing and producing too much thyroid hormone, leading to hyperthyroidism
Signs of Graves disease include:
Anxiety or irritability, Bulging eyes, Sensitivity to heat, Unexplained weight loss, Shaking hands or fingers, Tiredness
Fast or irregular heartbeat
