Glucosamine is found in high concentrations in cartilage and other connective tissues. As we age, the body’s own production of glucosamine is diminished and this can cause joint cartilage to lose its water holding capacity.
Cartilage is responsible for providing the “shock absorption” at the end of bones. It is the loss of this cushioning effect due to the loss of glycosaminoglycans that results in pain and loss of range of motion. Osteoarthritis is characterised by the breakdown of cartilage. Before Melrose Plant Sourced Glucosamine became available all glucosamine’s were sourced from Chitin, a major component of shellfish. This caused an allergy risk for many consumers. Melrose Plant Sourced Glucosamine is a unique form of Glucosamine hydrochloride. Sourced from fermented corn it is 100% free from shellfish or animal ingredients.
Both these forms of Glucosamine, in the pure form, deliver equally effective amounts of the desired Glucosamine to joint cartilage. Preference should be based on purity, safety, stability and choice of plant based. The Hydrochloride form yields 83.1% Glucosamine whereas the sulphate form with 20% Potassium/sodium chloride yields only 62.8% Glucosamine.
